It’s an Indo-Pak love match that has created ripples on both sides of the border but no one seems to have a clue about when and where did love blossom between Indian tennis queen Sania Mirza and dashing Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik.

A day after surprising almost everyone, except family, by announcing that they will tie the knot next month, speculation continues as to where exactly the romance began.

Sources say the two first met in Australia in January where Sania had just crashed out of the Australian Open and Pakistan had suffered yet another embarrassing defeat at the hands of Ricky Ponting’s men.

Not a trip to remember professionally but personally it was to be a life-changing one at least for Sania, who broke off her engagement with childhood friend Sohrab Mirza at the end of that month, citing incompatibility.

The break up was stunning because their lavish engagement just six months earlier was still fresh in everyone’s mind.

Neither Sania nor her family gave the exact reasons for the split but given yesterday’s announcement, speculation is rife that the 23-year-old Hyderabadi’s meeting with Shoaib may have contributed to the break up.

Shoaib too had been luckless in love before meeting Sania and that incidentally also had a Hyderabad connection. The all-rounder was accused of marrying and dumping one Ayesha Siddiqui but Shoaib denied that, insisting that he was merely engaged to the said girl.

Both seem to be controversy’s favourite children with Shoaib, a former captain of the Pakistan team, currently serving a one-year ban for indiscipline on the Australia tour and Sania battling a wrist injury besides warding off queries about just why she ended her engagement with Sohrab.

Sania’s career has veered off towards the uncertain after a breakthrough 2005. She rose to a career-high 27 in the WTA rankings in 2007 but poor form and never-ending injury battles have seen her slide to 92 currently.

Ironically, the two would be getting married at a time when India-Pakistan diplomatic ties have frozen following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

But they are certainly not the first cross-border couple.

Former Pakistan Test opener Mohsin Khan had tied Indian actress Reena Roy in the 1980s but the marriage didn’t last.

Marriage casts a shadow over Sania’s career but given the support Shoaib is promising, the Hyderabadi seems set to continue her on-court life as well.

“I fully understand what it takes to be an international sports person and I will support Sania in her career as long as she wishes to play. Representing India at the 2012 Olympics is very important for her and I will be the proudest husband if she can win a medal for her country,” said Shoaib.

Sania, who has lived in media glare ever since rising to stardom as an 18-year-old after moderate success on the WTA circuit, has pleaded for privacy.

“My wedding is inshallah going to be the biggest day of my life. I have been in the constant glare for too long and would appreciate the privacy at this very personal moment in my life,” she said.

But given the massive interest surrounding her new relationship, quote-hungry journalists are unlikely to leave her alone.

Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and Indian tennis star Sania Mirza are going to Tie The Knot in April, Sania’s father Imran Mirza confirmed to media.

Shoaib has formerly been engaged to Ayesha Siddiqui earlier in 2002 who claims to be married to the former Pakistani cricket captain. Ayesha’s father has also tried to threaten Shoaib to give Ayesha divorce before proceeding any ahead.

India’s TP, Sania Mirza is to be married to Shoaib Malik, the former cricket captain of Pakistan. A formal Wedding Reception has been scheduled within a month. There will be no engagement function.

This news was confirmed by Imran Mirza, father of Sania, late on Monday night.

“The couple will be based in Dubai, where Shoaib is a resident, and Sania will continue to play tennis once she recovers fully from the wrist injury that has marred her career in the recent past,” Imran said.

The former top-30 women’s tennis player is planning a comeback just before Wimbledon.

“My wedding is, inshallah, going to be the biggest day of my life. I have been under constant glare of the public for too long and would appreciate more privacy at this very personal moment in my life,” Sania said.

“I hope to be fully fit to represent India in the Commonwealth and Asian Games that are scheduled for later this year,” she added.

According to sources Shoaib was fully supportive of Sania’s tennis career. “I fully understand what it takes to be an international sportsperson and I will support Sania in her career as long as she wishes to play,” Shoaib said.

“Representing India, at the 2012 Olympics is very important for her and I will be the proudest husband if she can win a medal for her country,” he said.

Imran Mirza, who has coached Sania throughout her career, said:
“This is a unique case where the Husband and Wife will represent their respective countries in sport.”

Hyderabad, April 7: Married over landline, divorce via cellphone.

Shoaib Malik is at last free for Sania Mirza. But the tennis star will have to be content being the cricketer’s second wife, after all.

A murky eight-year saga of allegations and denials ended today after Shoaib formally divorced Ayesha Siddiqui this morning, finally acknowledging that he had indeed married the Hyderabad girl.

Sources said the Pakistani all-rounder dialled Ayesha’s landline number from his mobile to utter the triple talaq.

The 9am telephone talaq, which ended their June 2002 phone wedding, came after nightlong efforts at a compromise by a team of 15 mediators who included local qazis, relatives and friends of both families.

“I intervened after friends from Delhi urged me to bring about a compromise as both (Sania and Ayesha) were Hyderabad girls,” said Andhra Pradesh minorities minister Ahmadullah Syed Mohammed, one of those who played a role in making Shoaib accept that he had married Ayesha nearly eight years ago.

Till yesterday, Shoaib had refused to accept the marriage and kept insisting that he hadn’t met her and that there was no question of giving Ayesha the divorce she had been demanding. His denials had prompted the girl’s family to file cheating and harassment charges and police had impounded Shoaib’s passport on Monday.

The compromise was announced by Shams Babbar, the family doctor of the Siddiquis, and local politician Abid Rasool Khan after they received the talaqnama Shoaib had signed and sent to Pakistan for attestation by clerics.

Shoaib accepted all the claims made by Ayesha as his first wife and agreed to give her a divorce. He also offered her Rs 5,000 for each month of iddat to be observed by her for three months.

“At last justice has been done to my daughter and she is very happy that her word has been respected and honoured,” Ayesha’s mother Farissa told a media conference she addressed with Khan and Babbar. They also said the cases filed against Shoaib would be withdrawn.

A joint press conference by Sania and Shoaib, scheduled at the Mirza home in the evening, was, however, cancelled as neither wanted to face the media, sources said.

But what prompted Shoaib to admit that he had married Ayesha?

Police sources said the scene changed after Ayesha yesterday submitted more evidence of her association with Shoaib, including the clothes she claimed to have worn when she met him at a local hotel a few years ago.

It appears the city police told Sania’s father Imran Mirza to work out a compromise. Some of the mediators said Babbar, the family doctor of the Siddiquis, produced a certificate of an abortion Ayesha had which proved to be the clincher.

Police sources said passport entries had shown that Shoaib was in Hyderabad on the dates mentioned by Ayesha in her complaint and that forensic tests had confirmed most of Ayesha’s charges. “There were several twists and gaps in his written and oral statements,” a source said.

“If he had continued to reject Ayesha, it could have meant arrest and remand in judicial custody,” said a police official.

Sources close to Sania’s family said community elders were upset with her comments about Ayesha. “Ask anyone about them, they will tell you the truth,” Sania had said.

A prominent Sunni leader and a former judge said Sania had no right to insult other Muslim women. “We all know who is in the wrong and who is right.”

On Monday night, some Muslim leaders had called on Sania’s father and advised that he shouldn’t go ahead with the scheduled April 15 wedding in such a vicious atmosphere.

The senior Mirza later told Shoaib to put an end to the controversy. “Let us not give room for any more public outcry as the wedding is hardly a week away,” Imran is said to have told Shoaib.

But it was Sania who didn’t want a compromise. “If Shoaib crumbles under pressure, I will be his second wife,” she is said to have told her parents.

Family friends said there was a heated argument at the dinner table last night at the Mirza home, with Sania and Shoaib arguing for hours and the elders insisting on a compromise.

In Islamabad, a PTI report quoted Pakistani rights activist Ansar Burney as saying that Shoaib should “say sorry to Ayesha and the people and media of India and Pakistan as his actions (had) hurt relations between the two countries”.
