ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister of Pakistan Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani is sending a special gift to Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik and Indian tennis star Sania Mirza on their wedding scheduled next week. “I am going to Hyderabad on April 14 to participate in this grand celebrity wedding and I will deliver the Prime Minister’s special gift to the couple,” federal Minister for population and welfare Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan told Daily Times on Thursday. Dr Awan, who is a member of the parliament from Shoaib’s native city Sialkot, said many other members of parliament and federal ministers had also contacted her to attend the wedding. “I can take a parliamentary delegation to this wedding but I am not in favour of taking many people along because it will be a burden on the hosts in Hyderabad,” she added.

Dr Awan said however she would request to Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Khawaja Muhammad Asif to accompany her on this wedding because he also belonged to Sialkot. “Sports minister Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani has also shown interest for the wedding ceremony but I am not sure about him.” To a question about the special gift of the Prime Minister, she said that it was yet not decided what the Prime Minister would send to the newly married couple but it was confirmed that she would represent the federal government in the wedding ceremony. Dr Awan said she would also give a reception in the honour of Sania Mirza in Sialkot.

HYDERABAD: Shoaib Malik on Wednesday saved himself from a legal mess and also perhaps from a jail term, by agreeing to the Siddiquis’ demand to divorce

Ayesha or Maha Siddiqui whom, they alleged, the former Pakistan skipper had married.

Shoaib went to a qazi’s office and signed divorce papers, an admission of the fact that he not only knew Ayesha but had wedded her.

The ‘talaqnama’ that finally ended the public spat between Shoaib and the Siddiquis was prepared by Azmatullah Jafri, deputy qazi, Qila Mohammad Nagar, and signed by two sets of witnesses. From the Malik side, apart from community elder Maj GSM Quadri, Sania Mirza’s uncle Mohd Shafi Usman signed as witness to the divorce. Maha’s father and cousin also signed the papers.

The qazi had sought an affidavit stating that Shoaib would give Rs 15,000 as settlement amount to Maha, at Rs 5,000 a month. The process was completed by senior deputy qazi Mohd Aidil and a copy of the divorce certificate given to each side.

“The divorce has been settled and done,” Quadri told a press conference, adding the police case against Shoaib would be withdrawn. An application has already been filed for withdrawal of the FIR filed on Saturday.

Malik signed on the documents after a group of mediators convinced him that he faced arrest and a jail term. ‘‘Your passport and cell phone have been seized… the police has enough evidence to charge you. Once that happens, forget marriage

, it will be a long time before you are able to leave Hyderabad and India,’’ one of the mediators reportedly told him.

Sources suggest that Malik was unwilling to budge until late Tuesday night, insisting he did not know Ayesha. He came around on Wednesday morning after he was convinced that things could take an ugly turn, with the local police indicating that evidence provided by the Siddiquis was ‘‘good enough’’ for them to take the next step. Besides, two of the offences he was booked for were cognizable and non-bailable.

Cops had also matched the immigration stamps on the passport with the dates of video footage provided by the Siddiquis.

Worse, Shoaib’s flip-flop on whether or not he had signed the nikahnama was working against him. Police officers said proving his claim of a forged signature would have required forensic tests. Sources said finally, Shoaib was made to understand that the onus was on him to prove he was not guilty. ‘‘He understood that proving his innocence would be next to impossible and he may just end up in deeper trouble,’’ an official said.

LAHORE – Majority of Pakistanis and Indians were surprised on the cross-border marriage of Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik irrespective of their religious affiliations.
The marriage could mark a thaw in the bitter relationship between the sub-continental neighbours who have fought three wars since getting independence in 1947.
Both the countries are still in cold war postures, always threatening each other. The marriage of Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik is a breath of fresh air that could help overcome hostility between the two nations.
The recent development has strong emotional appeal. Sania and Shoaib are scheduled to get married in Hyderabad on April 15.
Various students of different colleges and universities in the provincial metropolis have expressed their views on the hot issue.
A student of Beaconhouse National University (BNU) Raza Yosaf said, “It is difficult to judge who is right and who is wrong since I do not know the details, but Shoaib marrying Sania should be considered at step towards Pak-India peace.”
A student Sana Gillani, BNU, said that Shoaib was cricketer and he should be appreciated for his performance in sports. “Why the hell are people invading into their personal lives? It is their life, let them do whatever they want,” she added.
Marryam Imtiaz, another student, said careers of both the players were on the downward so they have created this hype. “They are aiming to get international recognition as a celebrity couple and earn millions. She further said their marriage was attention-seeking exercise.
A student of Kinnaird College, Sara Ahmad said,” I thing the media should just get out of their affair and leave them alone. And just because they are getting married does not mean Pak-India are going to have better relations.”
“Since he has gone to India he must now bring his bride home,” Pakistani T20 captain Shahid Afridi said. Imran Nazir also rejected Ayesha’s statement that the former caption spoke to her on the phone during Shoaib’s alleged affair and marriage to the woman.
All-rounder Abdul Razzaq said that he went to Ayesha’s home with Shoaib during Pakistan cricket team’s tour to India in 2005 but he didn’t meet any girl.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan government said it will extend all assistance to former cricket captain Shoaib Malik, who has been slapped with cheating and harassment charges in India by Ayesha Siddiqui who claims to be his wife, days ahead of his planned wedding to tennis star Sania Mirza.

The Pakistan government said it was in touch with Indian authorities in connection with the police complaint filed against Malik by the Indian woman.

Malik is currently in Hyderabad and his passport has been seized after an FIR was registered against him.

Foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit told the media that the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi was in contact with Indian authorities and had asked them to share information on the FIR filed against Malik in Hyderabad.

“Pakistani authorities have to wait till all the details of the FIR are with us,” Basit said.

“We will give Shoaib Malik all the assistance he requires. We will proceed in the best interests of Shoaib Malik,” Basit said.

The case was filed against Shoaib Malik 10 days before his planned wedding with Sania Mirza.

Malik recently travelled to Hyderabad after Ayesha’s reiterated her claims that she had married the cricketer in 2002.

Hyderabad Police on Monday questioned Malik and had taken away his passport.

The 28-year-old Shoaib told police, at the Jubilee Hills residence of 23-year-old tennis star Sania Mirza, that he had been tricked into marriage with Ayesha.

Denying reports that he had telephonic ‘nikah’ with any Indian girl, Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik on Tuesday alleged he has been a victim of a fraud done by a family based in Hyderabad in India.

‘‘Yes, Shoaib had an affair with a girl named Ayesha on the internet. He wanted to marry her and Siddiqui claimed her as his daughter. But the photographs they showed of Ayesha to Malik was not that of their real daughter. They tried to commit a fraud with us,’‘ Shoaib’s brother Imran told media persons here.

M A Siddiqui of Hyderabad had claimed that Malik had married his daughter Ayesha and had threatened to move court if his daughter did not get a formal divorce.

Imran, however, rubbished these claims saying he and Malik had applied for Indian visas and will be going there soon to file a case of fraud against the Siddiquis.

‘‘We didn’t want this issue to be raked up in public but they are taking advantage of Malik’s popularity as a cricketer. The thing is Malik liked a girl they claimed was their daughter and showed him pictures of another girl. When he did meet their daughter it was another girl,’‘ he said.

Shoaib Malik & Sania Mirza

In an interesting turn of events, a certain section of media speculated that the much talked about wedding of tennis star Sania Mirza with the former captain of Pakistan cricket team, Shoaib Malik has already been solemnised at a private ceremony in Dubai.

Has Sania Mariza already married Shoaib Malik?

The fact that the hotel in Hyderabad has been booked for reception and not for ‘nikaah’ gave rise to this speculation. Media reports believe that Shoaib is in Hyderabad only for the reception. A media report also says that Sania Mirza’s wedding card has only the reception date and there is no mention of nikah.

Marriage with Ayesha Shoaib’s ‘stupidity’

Meanwhile, Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik’s brother-in-law Imran Zafar Malik claimed that Shoaib’s ‘nikah’ (marriage) to Ayesha Siddiqui was never registered legally, was invalid and “an act of stupidity”.

“Their marriage was not registered. The legal process was never completed… it is not valid. She (Ayesha) had pressurised us for sending nikah papers. They were sent for her satisfaction,” he told reporters here.

“Just a signature on a paper is not a evidence for marriage, the other formalities should be performed. The marriage of Ayesha and Shoaib is an act of stupidity by Shoaib,” he said.
